Disney Cruise

For the kid in us

Disney entered the cruise world in stages:

1985–1993: Partnership Era

  • Disney partnered with Premier Cruise Line to offer cruises with Disney characters and vacation packages combining cruises + theme parks.

  • The partnership ended in 1993 when Premier switched licensing partners.

1994–1998: Creation of Disney’s Own Cruise Line

  • Disney decided to build its own cruise brand and announced plans in 1994.

  • The operating company was formally set up in 1996.

  • Disney ordered purpose-built ships and purchased a private island in the Bahamas (later Castaway Cay).

1998 → Present: Expansion & Global Growth

  • First sailings began in 1998.

  • The fleet has expanded with multiple ship classes and private destinations.

  • New ships and global deployment (Asia, Europe, etc.) continue to expand the brand through the late 2020s and beyond.
